PostSubject: Ceonn's Weekly Report! Thursday April 22nd   Fri Apr 23, 2010 4:14 am

This is ceonns weekly report for the Ps3! don't be shy, come right on in!

We will begin with the review , so get ready! Today it's gonna be Star Ocean, the Last Hope.

Intro

Star Ocean is the new RPG made by Square Enix for Xbox and PS3. Is this game worth the buy? Is it any fun? I'm here to help answer those questions for you today with Ceonns super awesome review of magic! *sparkle Sparkle*

Story (6/10)

The storyline is a big point in most RPGs, and in the Last hope, the storyline is very basic. You have our young hero named Edge maverick going through the galaxy to find a new place for earthlings to stay. The reason for this is due to World War 3, which was basically a war to see who had the biggest bomb. It resulted in everyone being forced to live underground. Now that warp travel had been made possible, Edge and a few other teams of astronauts are sent on a mission to find a new hom for Earth.

The storyline may seem interesting, but it's actually rather unoriginal when it gets down to the plot. As you go through these planets you will soon realize one thing. They are all underdeveloped planets. that means everyone on said planets have no idea what modern technology is. Your characters use swords and bows instead of modern weaponry as well. Basically, the only element that is sci fi in the least is when your going to and from each planet and when each planets plot is over. Also, another problem. the cutscenes are rather long and dull, with little to no information given. Plus, the characters backstories weren't really fleshed out.

Even with sci-fi fans dissapointed, fans of fantasy worlds should be very pleased, as each of these worlds are well thought out with a unique world map that explorers will enjoy. The plot twist later on in the story is actually sprung when you would least expect it, so that was a nice change.

Gameplay (8/10)

The gameplay is solid in this game. You will find yourself enjoying the battle system more and more as you continue on with the game. The seven possible party members you can get are all unique combat-wise and you will find yourself experimenting with them as you play the game. The battle system is unique in itself, and tales fans will be happy to know that Star ocean is the reason the battles started happening in wide open circular plains. It's fast paced and you will allway end up paying very close attention to your surroundings at any given moment. Since it is difficult to explain with words, I will better describe it with a video.

Aside from battle, you can also do a number of side quests. Every store in the game has fetch quests, that have you get materials for them, which then lowers the stores prices for you. There are also quests you can find by talking to townspeople and also give you rewards upon their completion. There's a colliseum you can fight enemies in for fun, with a cameo battle for it's final battle. Post-game content includes the 2 extra dungeons that replay some bosses from the main game and have original bosses. They both end with classic bosses from each star ocean, Gabrial Celeste and Ethereal Queen. Last but not least is synthesis, which allows you to use materials to create items, which is a very useful feature, and the possible items you can make is nearly limitless.

Sound (7/10)

the sound in this game is simply amazing. They realy knew how to set the mood and tones for the boss fights, so I am really happy with the music.

Graphics (7/10)

The graphics were very nice. It would be 8 but I deducted a point for how they rendered sunny areas... I was nearly blinded.

Voice Acting (5/10)

Beyond horrid. It needs serious improvement. I feel like the characters were speaking in a monotone, there were repeated actors... ugh. If you have the ps3 version do yourself a favor and turn the voice acting to japan. then theres... sarah... She's like a princess peach but with a [i]bit[/b] too much Justin Timberlake stuffed in. I'm not kidding, people quit this game just cause of the crappy voices, and for once I don't blame them.

Final evaluation.
6.6 (the final score is calculated by obtaining the mean of all the other scores, thus its in this case 5 + 6 + 8 + 7 + 7 / 5)

This game isn't particularly great, but fans of the series will enjoy it. Also, to the newcomers to the series, I recommend you pick it up, it has a lot of quirks, but it's fun nonetheless.

Now for our release date report starring... the PS3!!

Apparently I somehow missed this when it was originally posted! Another great job, Ceonn!

I'm a fan of the Star Ocean series, and The Last Hope is the only one I don't own yet... it's *great* to know you can switch the language to Japanese in the PS3 one, that makes me very happy to hear!

I'm really intrigued by NieR, personally, and will be interested to hear what people think of it...

Once more, thanks for your hard work! Very Happy
